Founded in 1822, Athens State University is the oldest institution of higher education in Alabama's state educational system.  It is an upper-division university serving transfer students from community colleges and universities across the state of Alabama.  Currently, Athens State enrolls approximately 3,000 students, employs 93 full-time faculty and over 125 adjunct instructors.  Watch the video below for a brief history of the institution, its mission, and goals for the future.

Three colleges comprise the University and include; Arts & Sciences, Business, and Education.  The first online course was offered in 1998 and included a basic web site without support of a learning management system.  Since that time, Athens State has invested significantly in state-of-the-art technology to support distance education such as Blackboard 8 Academic Suite, Tegrity Campus, Wimba Collaboration Suite, Learning Objects Campus Pack, and Respondus LockDown Browser.
